The battle is all but over, and hope seems to be lost. Zoe and her fellow Resistance fighters are on the run, having lost their home, their protection, and their leader. They are outnumbered and outmatched by the powerful corporation that controls the world, and the cruel Chancellor is inches away from completing a scheme that would kill most of humanity. Zoe's only remaining option is to chase the impossible dream of upending the Link system, freeing the world from the hardware that controls their thoughts and emotions, and hope it will trigger a revolution.
The plot requires a nearly impossible mission to infiltrate the dangerous Community, and it is a task that Zoe must unfortunately complete alone. With challenges and surprises at every turn, nothing goes according to plan. Adrien's visions of the future now show two possible outcomes: one in which they succeed, and one in which humanity falls. It all lies in Zoe's hands.
Full of romance, high-adrenaline action and shocking twists, Shutdown is a heart-pounding conclusion to an exciting sci-fi adventure trilogy for young adults.
WOW. What an amazing ending to a fascinating series.
The beginning of this book was SO HARD on me. Anastasiu threw me for a loop in Override when I found out about Adrien. Pause here for a moment and imagine me like Rocky, arms and legs spread wide, face to the sky, yelling:
That’s what it was like. So I went into book 3 already hesitant and skeptical – there was no way she was gonna screw this up and not let Adrien and Zoel be together (OR ELSE.) but I had no idea how she was going to bring him back from that.
I really shouldn’t have worried.
This whole book is one action-packed adventure. I absolutely LOVE that there was never a dull moment; I never got bored or felt like things were dragging on as I so often have in other books. We got to see Zoe do so much growing and evolving in this series and book 3 is kind of the max out point for her. I felt very connected to her as she struggled through this story; there were times when she felt like maybe it would be best to just go to sleep and never wake up were so heart-wrenching. But then watching her pull it together, keep it together, and power through like a Grade A Badass inspired me.
Shutdown picks up where Override left off…which is, in essence, where everything seems to have gone to complete and utter cow patty. Adrien is completely destroyed, Zoe and his mom are even more at odds, the Chancellor is wrecking shop all over the place, and Zoe is carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders as she tries to be not only the leader Taylor has appointed her to be, but the salvation that Adrien has seen her (and everyone needs her) to be. Things are bad and getting worse and finally Zoe accepts what she’s known all along: it’s time to go full-tilt-boogie on the Chancellor or bust.
Fueled by her love for the person Adrien has become, her sadness and anger at the death of so many people, and her desire for salvation, Zoe takes on the Chancellor in what is the ultimate showdown.
I was afraid of how the story would end – it seemed like there was no way to wrap this up without being anticlimactic, but Anastasiu totally nailed it. Amazing world building and character development, lots of geek tech, and even some steamy romance – this book has it all. Heather Anastasiu does not take the easy way out. Everything doesn’t magically become pretty and fixed and perfectly tied up with string. Things are ugly and people change into completely different personalities and plans fail left and right. But in the end you’re left with a feeling of completeness.
Bittersweet, this review is. I’ll miss these characters for sure – Adrien and Zoe and Xona and Ginni and Cole, the whole lot. But I’m so happy that Glitch goes out with a bang.
I created a playlist of songs that I thought fit the feel and events of this book. Check it out and let me know what you think! :]
